That would be the most straightforward method, as you are correct that
the second channel of a 322 is RF only. There are ways to get from IR to
RF but they are complicated and expensive.

I'm using a MyBlaster to control a 311, and it was extremely fast and
easy to set up, but the LIRC method is known to work as well.

Some DirecTV receivers can be directly controlled by a serial connection.
