The rectangular defects have a digital origin.  If you can get a good 
display from the same DVD on one box the problem is occurring in the 
other DVD player - it can't read without error the digital signals from 
the DVD that you have made.  It could be a problem with the recorder. 
The old tv won't produce this kind of defect - but poor digital 
reception would.  Then you'd have problems on both displays, and 
mytharchive would probably have given up anyway!
