You can send SMS to just about any phone without having to "register"
with anyone (assuming you know the network they are on).

But your idea is very good.

You can make an even more flexible system by just sending an email to
yourself, then using a good MUA to forward it to your phone if it meets
certain criteria (sender, subject etc.).
