It takes some fiddling to get working with LIRC, but the USB-UIRT 
does both transmit and receive. It also has its own carrier frequency 
generator, so it is immune to lost bits due to the host CPU being too 
busy.

I, too, thought of building my own, but I figured that it would cost 
me too much of what little free time I have than the $50 the USB-UIRT 
did.
