This has always been the case with hard drive warranties. In fact it
used to be SOP before they kept track of manuacture dates. Then they
started keeping track of manufacture dates and stamping them on the
drives to give a reasonable warranty for those that didn't keep their
receipts.

So keep your receipts in a safe place.
