You can also have the opposite problem -- if the two outlets you want to
communicate between happen to be on different "legs," it probably won't
work because the transformer makes a pretty effective choke to block the
high-frequency signals these devices use.  (This is specific to the
U.S., where a split-phase 240V/120V system is in use.  Places that use
straight 240V systems don't have this issue.)
