You don't say what your video card is, but certain NVIDIA cards can
freeze up with the infamous "NVRM: Xid". Next time you freeze, see if
you can ssh into your machine and check the bottom of the output of
"dmesg" for anything like that.

Unfortunately, if that's the case, there's no well-defined way of
dealing with it. Some people claim to have found solutions but it's
hit-and-miss.
