Check out JP1 Remotes. http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/
I had an $18 One For All remote with a JP1 connector from Walmart (they no
longer carry it) and had made my own JP1 parallel port interface with a few
bucks in Radio Shack parts...It's easier than building your own IR
Transmitter/Receiver. I'm now using a OFA remote that has been modified by the
guy who runs that message board.

The one I have is the older 6131 and was less than $30 with priority shipping.
It's OFA's Tivo replacement model that has been modified to add a JP1
interface. This particular model is not a learning remote, but you can download
hundreds of code sets online (just like setting up lirc). There are other
models that also include learning functionality. In my experience, the learned
codes are much less reliable with lirc.
I've been very happy with this remote. It has a good amount of buttons without
being too big. With the JP1 interface, I can reprogram every button to my
heart's content, including marcros. It takes a little reading up to figure out
the programming process, but it's no more difficult than setting up your own
myth box. It's easiest to program on windows -- supposedly some people have
been able to do it on linux using wine, but I couldn't get it working.
It's not the easiest method, but it's very functional and cost effective. The
WAF has been pretty good too -- It's small and simple with macros and no touch
screen menus to navigate.
