Ok i've been using these boards quite a lot.

If you specify 1080i it allows for the following timings

1080i
720p
576p
480p
576i
480i

And you can use xrandr or some other tool to switch resolutions.

If you want to check this just try the following as root on the command line

startx -- -logvebose 6
