This approach turned out to be the winner for me.  It's been working for 
over a week now, so I assume I'm safe.  My single PVR-250 now reliably 
comes up as /dev/video1 with the above option, so mythbackend always 
knows where to find it.

I think these went into my /etc/modules.d/ivtv file (in Gentoo), though 
I can't verify since my myth box is off at the moment (and at a remote 
location).

Thanks a lot for the tip.  I think I later noticed that someone had 
posted on this very issue only a week or two ago, but I totally missed 
it in my searches.  Too bad I don't have time & patience to keep up w/ 
this large list.  I apologize for adding to the clutter.
