I have a feeling this may be the "secret sauce" I needed. My
/etc/sysconfig/lircd had an empty lne:

** entire file **
# Options to lircd
LIRCD_OPTIONS=
****************

It now reads:

** entire file **
# Options to lircd
LIRCD_OPTIONS='--device /dev/lirc1'
****************

As soon as I can kick the 5-yr-old off her cartoons, I'll restart lircd,
test, accept success and if it fails, repeat with lirc0 and then lirc.
I'll report back.

I'll also archive this tip in my MYTH.Save email directory so I'll never
ask again and maybe even be able to help someone later.

Thank you.

Hmm ... this shouldn't affect her cartoons. Unless it calls for a reboot.
Which it shouldn't. Must thnk ...
