ALSA devs changed aplay. It no longer gives info about, i.e.,
user-defined devices.

I'd vote for permissions on the audio device or your system is now
running a sound daemon. In other words, I'm thinking your ALSA conf
file is fine so I'd recommend going down other roads first.
