Why would he lose the filesystem if one disk went down?  He said he
would use a Raid 1, I assume across the 2 disks (as it wouldn't make
any sense to do a Raid 1 on one disk).  So if one disk goes down, he
still has the mirror of the filesystem, but he would lose the
recordings that are on the bad disk.  Though as others have since
mentioned, I'm not sure I'd go the LVM route, and rather use two
different recording locations.
