Combining antennas is tricky, at best.  Works for some but not for most.  If your targets are literally on 90 degree compass points, that may be the best case for combining as there will be the least amount of phase cancellation and/or ghosting.  And, yes, you just run them backwards through a splitter.  You can get fancy and use traps or band-pass filters to control what frequencies you allow through from each antenna.
