This thing is a completely exposed circuit board.  I just bought
(on-line, so I have to wait) two adapters for very little $$, and those
are contained entirely within a plastic housing.  Hopefully, they will
do the trick.  I won't know until I get them, though..

And, yeah.. I figured they were passive.  If you looked at this board,
you could see the wire traces going straight from one pin on one end to
a corresponding pin on the other.
