Why not just use the 3 drives separately, then?

I enjoyed the concept of the BAARF site - I didn't read it closely,  
but my understanding is that RAID5 does protect your data if only one  
of the drives in the array fails. And if you replace that drive  
immediately.

Like you. I don't regard my TV programmes as critically important so  
I'd be inclined just to mount the three drives as /mnt/video1, /mnt/ 
video2, /mnt/video3 and use Myth's new "recording groups" ("storage  
groups"?) feature. Sure, if one of the drives dies you lose a bunch  
of TV shows, but only 1/3 of them and in this case you're still able  
to use your system whilst you save up for a replacement disk. This  
way you get 50% extra storage space, too!!
