[mythtv-users] Remote backend server, best way to sync with local backend

Hi all.

After moving hemispheres, my wife and I are missing TV from our old
country (mainly documentaries). I am planning on shipping a mythbackend
to a friend, where he will connect it to an aerial / power / Internet.

I then will control the recording via ssh / http tunnel.

Questions

1 / It will be recording DVB ie mpg2. So to get the size down I guess I
will have to transcode? the recordings. At 720x520 ish how big will the
recordings be per hour at a reasonable quality?

2 / I will then need a script that syncs the new recordings back to my
mythbackend where I will watch them. Has anyone done this? Is there
anyway to script the new mytharchive export / import (so I can get the
metadata)

3 / I thought I read about a way of sleeping the box and having it wake
on an alarm to record. Is anyone doing this with reliability and if so
what hardware do I need?

Any suggestions appreciated
Cheers
Steve
