Personally I think it's a case of you get what you pay for, but if  
you don't intend to use it too heavily the cheap ones generally work.

Only some units will handle DVD-RAM, if that's a factor for you. The  
cheaper ones tend to be noisier as well, if that matters.

Some of the cheaper ones will only do DVD+R dual layer, not DVD-R DL,  
but that might not matter to you either.

Lightscribe is of interest to some people, but the blanks cost a lot.  
An Avery label is a lot cheaper and you can print in color on it.

I'm somewhat partial to the Plextor units, and I stay away from Sony  
because of their arrogant attitude towards copy protection (can you  
say "root kit"?), but that's just my personal opinion.
