After loading the cifs kernel module, but before mounting your filesystem:

echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled

But, Chris is right.  Regardless of whether you do the above, you 
shouldn't need to run mythbackend or mythfrontend as root.
