I agree and have experienced this first hand, although the OP has a
Radeon 7000 which is well supported with the open source radeon
driver, so he shouldn't have to rely on ATI at all

I've done this for the past couple of years with a Radeon 9000 and
NVideo FX5200 (in well cooled cases though) and have not had any
problems - those tiny turbines can make one hell of a noise.
