Just to make sure we're speaking the same words, "time to record before
start of show"/"time to record past end of show" will mean the optional
seconds to record (these are the exact words given for the setting in
mythfrontend's settings). "Start early"/"end late" will mean the
mandatory (part of the schedule) minutes to record before/after a
showing--the settings in individual recording rules.

However, note that in this case, the words "conflict" must be defined to
include back-to-back recordings. I.e. if you have 3 recordings:
Show A: 7:00-7:30 on card 1 input 1
Show B: 7:00-8:00 on card 2 input 1
Show C: 7:30-8:00 on ...
And you have 3 cards and show C is available on card 3 input 1, show C
will still be recorded on card 1 input 1. Therefore, it's impossible to
record "time to record before start of show" on the beginning of show C
and "time to record past end of show" on the end of show A, so it's ignored.
And, in the case of only 2 shows with /any/ number of capture cards (1
or 10000) and no shows set to record before show A or after show B:
Show A: 8:00-9:00
Show B: 9:00-10:00
but you decide, you know because of the terrible scheduling in
Australia, I'll just put 600seconds of "time to record before start/past
end of show" into the mix, show A will start recording at 7:50 and end
at about 8:00 (plus or minus some seconds, but these are irrelevant to
the current discussion). Show B will start recording at about 8:00 and
will end at 10:10.
If you want to force 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after all shows,
you'll /have/ to use "start early"/"end late" settings of 10. These are
applied when scheduling and will cause conflicts (depending on the
number of shows/cards). Then, you adjust the start early/end late
(using positive and/or negative values) and/or number of capture cards
to allow recording all your shows.
If you want "padding when I can get it--even if it means my recordings
are pushed off to other capture cards but don't miss a recording just to
get it"--you want the softpad branch. Please read the entire (4 pages
of the) thread--still in progress--at

details.
