It doesn't really ignore the .asoundrc--it just uses a device name that 
was configured by the ALSA developers instead of one configured by the 
user.  The spdif device is identical to the "digital" device in the 
.asoundrc on the wiki (assuming the user properly configures the card 
and device numbers as described in the comments), but it does not do 
format and rate conversion, so it will /only/ work with 48kHz PCM (or 
AC-3 or DTS) output.
