FWIW, I'm running an older version of mysql and I 
experience this problem about once a week.

rpm -qa | grep mysql
mysql-server-3.23.5

rpm -qa | grep mythtv
mythtv-backend-0.19-120.rhfc3.at8-16.FC3.1
