My setup is working pretty much like yours.
But I'd like to be able to switch outputs, preferably while playing, so 
I can decide to listen to music via the TV speakers now, or watch TV 
using my 5.1 setup.
Additionally, in a perfect world, the encoding of the original audio 
source would not matter and be converted as appropriate for the ouput 
(TV vs. 5.1).

Maybe jack is what I am looking for?
