I was able to get this problem mostly solved using nvidia-settings,
making sure all the vsync options were unchecked and making sure to
put a "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" in my .xinitrc file. I did
get some *very* ugly stuttering when messing with nvidia-settings. I
changed the "Flat Panel Scaling" to "Fixed adpect ratio scaled" and
that seemed to help although I have no idea what that setting actually
does.
Right now, on my setup, I don't see any Xorg CPU usage when watching
live 720p, but do see the same Xorg CPU usage you do when watching
recorded 720p programs. I'm not sure why this is. However, I don't
have any major audio stuttering despite the CPU usage so I've learned
to live with it .. at least until I can upgrade. :)
I'd be willing to try some things out to try and fix it.
