have a RAID 5 (using mdadm) with 3 300gig drives giving me 600gigs, cost
$360 for the drives (120 each). Gives me a lot of recording time,
especially after I cut the commercials out.
As for DVD you will need to transcode HDTV to the resolution and bitrate
compatible with DVD mpeg2.
