Pictures! I see your predicament with the walls now. With that color, I
see why the wife doesn't care for traditional in-walls. I'd hate to
break up the space any further as well. I'm voting for in-ceiling fronts
and surround. Besides, you'll have no room for the center channel once
you squeeze the TV in above the mantle.

If you were my customer with that budget I'd steer you to the Sonance
Quintette 522QR (not the 521's) in-ceilings. Just a hair larger than
your standard light cans with adjustable soft dome tweeters. Poly's,
mylars or metals will be *harsh* in that room. Retro in some backboxes
if you can, stuff the snot outta the joist cavities if you can't.

Realisticly, you'll be around 1500 after you mix in a decent sub. Don't
worry about low-freq extension, you'll want a smaller driver (8-10 inch)
to reach higher up, say around 135Hz. the 105-120Hz range is a no-man's
land for crossovers. Energy or JBL would be good choices for a budget
sub in that area.

How good are you at fishing wires?
