Bad configure?  But, regardless, you don't need to mess with the 
installer.  If you just untar it to the right place, it will work and 
will not be deleted the next time you upgrade.  And, if you really want 
to get fancy, put the "non-standard" themes in ~/.mythtv (I think in 
~/.mythtv/themes, but can't remember off hand).
