its not that the Bose speakers suck per-se, its that for the same price, from 
a *real* speaker manufacturer you can get upwards of twice the quality.

The issue though is that most people don't know what to listen to or for when 
testing out speakers. They don't know where to shop for them, and they think 
the audiophile boutique stores will be too expensive. 
Most go to Circuit City and buy what they sell, Bose targets these consumers 
and offers them something that sounds better than what they're hearing out of 
the cheap Polks, Infinity and Klipsh's being sold and then are convinced that 
they can get it all for just a bit more money. And as much as Polk and 
Infinity seem like real speaker companies, they too just can not compete with 
the smaller specialty speaker  companies either, *but* at least they don't 
over price their speakers (and Infinity is owned by H/K and have put out some 
excellent audiophile level speakers, you just won't find them at Best 
Buy/Circuit City).

Now this isn't an attack on people, if your content with what you have, stay 
that way, its an addicting habit, I've forced 2 college apt-mates to drop 
around $5-10K on home theatre setups after living with me, it can be an 
expensive hobby. I just try and educate people to be a little more 
discriminating when spending money on home theatre equipment. I've seen too 
many people walk into Best Buy and buy a tv on a whim to only end up with a 
horrible t.v. when the one sitting next to it on the floor is a great one. 
Just because people don't do a little research. I've even seen Sound & Vision 
and Stereophile's Guide to Home Theatre sold at BB/CC....

<rant>and why is it that people always point to Consumer Reports? I don't 
think I've ever read a review in there for any product covered by specialist 
magazines that ever agreed with the opinion of the specialist magazines. My 
dad even bought their choice for washer and dryer like 10 years ago, tops in 
quality and reliability according to them, they've been nothing but trouble 
the minute the 3yr warranty was up. Its a good thing my dad is a mechanical 
engineer and can fix it himself, but what a dissapointment.</rant>
