[mythtv-users] Transcoding on a non myth machine

It occurs to me that transcoded files play through the soundcard,
whereas untranscoded ones play through the 350's outputs (and then
through the soundcard). I wonder if there's some inconsistency there
that's making transcoded files sound softer. I'll probably have to
try playing some untranscoded files directly through mplayer, and
then likewise with the transcoded ones; presumably then -both-
cases will go through the ivtv framebuffer (and thus -only- out
the soundcard w/o an intermediate step in the 350's outputs for
the MPEG2 case), and that might tell me if it's really the case
that the transcoded audio is quiet or there's some other step that's
responsible.

Btw, alsamixer reports that my master is at 71% (where it's been since
I got the machine); I upped center to 100%, capture to 94%, and IEC958
to 100% at some point in the past to get some other levels to work
better, but it hasn't helped the transcoding case much. (Even if my
master is too low, -all- audio is looped through the soundcard, so
you'd think it would make the untranscoded stuff just as soft, but
it doesn't---MP2 is soft, but MP4 is much softer, and they -both-
go through the master, I believe.)
