Yes, just run the backend and run the mythweb module to scheduele the tv 
programs (you can have one shot recordings or recurring recordings)

The beaty of mythtv is that it is very modular and you do _not_ have to 
install all the modules.

Typically, you will have to install: (FC4)
 	mythtv-backend-0.19-20060103.RS
 	mythtv-setup-0.19-20060103.RS
 	mythtv-0.19-20060103.RS
 	libmyth-0.19-20060103.RS
 	mythweb-0.19-20060103.RS

Run mythtv-setup to setup the cards and the channels, then via the mythweb 
(http://<host>/mythweb/) module you can easy scheduele the recording.

And if you even find the mythweb module overkill, insert them directly in 
the mythconverg database in mysql.
