if this helps, here is the xorg.conf i've been using with good success 
... i was running an ATI AIW Radeon 9600 and my TV (4:3) is 1080i 
native, so this is a 540p timing ... i've since upgraded to an nVidia 
GeForce 6600GT and haven't looked back (scaling and deint is 
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better now!!)
