you guys are all making the assumption that mpeg4 is somehow better
than mpeg2 for HD. It is not. It does allow you to make smaller files
for similar quality, but you could as well do the same reencode in
mpeg2 and get similar results.
You guys need to start thinking in terms of x264, its a much better
succesor to mpeg2 for HD than mpeg4 is. Its not perfect, and takes a
lot more horsepower to encode and playback, but for filesize concerns
is the best method.
Of course if you don't care about the loss of quality with lower
bitrate encodes with mpeg4 then I guess none of this matters...
