Maybe you misread my "idle" time as busy CPU time?

I read it to mean "0% used @ idle," and I was confused. However, I am
impressed that you do not need to run XvMC. I must use it with an AMD Athlon
64 3500+ machine.

No, regular FC5 kernel. I think I'm currently one version behind the latest

The machine (above) dual boots Knoppmyth and FC5, but Knoppmyth greatly out
performs FC 5.

Even before MythTV is called, FC 5 uses much more of the system's resources.
I'm guessing that the standard FC 5 installation is bloated with "stuff"
that is not necessary to run MythTV. For this reason I am considering
installing from source and selecting only the modules etc that are needed to
run MythTV.

Did you use Jarod's instructions as a guide? Perhaps you installed from
source?

Thanks,
Preston
