I wonder if a different ethernet card would help?  Some of them take on
more of the work than others.  The ubiquitous cheap RealTek NICs are
pretty simplistic and demand a little more effort from the CPU.  That
said, I haven't tested different cards side-by-side to see if there's a
significant difference.
