I think that is the case with the series 2 units as well. My  
understanding is that if the unit dies you are pretty well screwed.

You might want to check with the WeakKnees folks about drives that  
are already formatted in the required way, but it may well turn out  
that your best bet is to transfer the lifetime license to a series 3  
unit and then try and sell that, if you have the cash available in  
the short term to cover the transfer time.
