We have a winner! Thanks.

Wish I could report complete success, but I think one of my recordings
was damaged. I got to the dvdauthor step, but the process hung at
that point. One of the stream.mv2 files in my mytharchive working
directory wasn't recognized by mplex, which disrupted the spiderweb of
fifos that mythburn.py sets up to feed dvdauthor. I found the
following processes running, including two zombies:

gwr 13739 13375 0 09:58 pts/0 00:01:27 [mplex] <defunct>
gwr 13740 13375 0 09:58 pts/0 00:00:00 [mplex] <defunct>
gwr 13741 13375 0 09:58 pts/0 00:00:00 mplex -f 8 -v 0 -o
/videos/mytharchive/work/3/final.mpg
/videos/mytharchive/work/3/stream.mv2
/videos/mytharchive/work/3/stream0.ac3
gwr 13742 13375 0 09:58 pts/0 00:00:00 mplex -f 8 -v 0 -o
/videos/mytharchive/work/4/final.mpg
/videos/mytharchive/work/4/stream.mv2
/videos/mytharchive/work/4/stream0.ac3
gwr 13743 13375 0 09:58 pts/0 00:00:00 mplex -f 8 -v 0 -o
/videos/mytharchive/work/5/final.mpg
/videos/mytharchive/work/5/stream.mv2
/videos/mytharchive/work/5/stream0.ac3

I deleted the recording that seemed to be a problem and it will be
re-recorded. (It's kids' programming on Nickelodeon -- they re-run
those freakin' episodes like 5 times a month anyway... 8^)

Thanks for the pointer, Brad.
