If you want a quiet drive you should get a Western Digital.
According to http://www.silentpcreview.com/ Western Digital makes
the quietest drives.  Hard drives make the most noise in your
PC - even more than the fans.  If you need quiet and you need ATA
then there are 3 cheap drives you can get at 250,300,320 GB with
"whisper quiet" technology.  This technology includes extra quiet
bearings and firmware that reduces seek noise:
