I knew what the error meant, it was fine.  I'm not that much of a newbie.  ;)  
What I think is misleading about the documentation I've found for installing 
mythtv, both on the mythtv.org wiki and from the guide i was using, was that 
the instructions said, "to setup the initial database, run this 
command:  /usr/share/mythtv/database> mysql -u root < mc.sql"

I was under the impression by running that command, mysql was going to create 
database "mc.sql", especially since mc.sql didn't exist in the database 
directory.  So, I ran locate and found the file 
in /usr/share/doc/packages/mythtv/database/mc.sql

That is what stumped me.
