If you are really set on re-using the IR receiver(s) that you got with
the NOVAs,  then I can offer you a morsel on encouragement.  

Somewhere on the Web I have seen at least two ways to do this,  but
unfortunately I cannot find the link.  

AFAIR, the gist of it is that your receivers are basically the same,
electronically, as the IR receiver component used in most of 'home brew'
circuits.  As such the signal will ultimately go in to a serial port on
the PC.  The information you need is largely the pin-out of the Nova
receivers, and how much voltage to apply.
