Soory bout that, I forget to turn that off sometimes here at work.

I'll give that a shot. I didn't originally use the one from Wilsonnet because I was afraid it might be out of date. Besides the Wiki entry was so tempting cause it says its for NForce4.

So just to be clear, I should not select passthrough? Is that because the asoundrc is basically doing that anyway?

I did try another Nick card in a spare PCIe-1x slot. That seems to work just about as long as the onboard one does, so perhaps there's something messed up on the PCI bus somewhere. I need to do some more trouble shooting before I am convinced, but I'm leaning that way. I would like to just get another one of those boards, because it fits my needs exactly, but I'm a bit nervous now since I don't know if its hardware or just some strange incompatibility with Linux. I ran a Windows install on another disk in it, and it seemed to work fine network wise, but I could never shut down windows. It would always just stop at the "Windows is Shutting Down Page".

Subject: [mythtv-users] Help getting SPDIF working on NForce4 under FC5
Hey guys
I've figured out most of the things to get my machine up and running.  The one issue that I'm stuck on is getting the Digital out working.  I'm running on an Asus A8N5X board which is NForce 4 based.  I've tried the instructions in the Wiki, no luck.  I've been reading like crazy, but so far have not had any luck figuring out what all I need to look at to determine the proper setup for my board.  So neither the MythFrontend nor Xine can use the SPDIF.
I'm hoping that its not a hardware problem.  I am however starting to wonder.  I've been having problems with this machine's network interface since day one.  So far the best I can achieve is having network connectivity for about 10 minutes and then all connectivity stops and I can't get in or out of the box over my internal network.  I'm starting to think there is something not quite right with this board.
If anyone can share any info on debugging the ALSA stuff what would be helpful.
