Hopefully this will be useful to someone else searching the archives..

After changing every possible function of my video driver, and even
trying different video drivers the solution was to go to an 800x600
resolution.

Card is a Permedia Fire GL 1000 pro built-in on a Dell Precision 410
Workstation. (glint)

Once I set the video resolution to 800x600 I was able to launch and
close recording viewing with no issues.
I tried every possible resolution and I would still get the same
results, but when I would go back to 800x600 I was unable to cause the
video to fail.
