I went back and forth between a few svn revisions, strictly in the
"-fixes". I finally got revision 9579 to actually report something in
the lircd log file:

Apr 12 18:35:45 livingroom lircd 0.7.1: accepted new client on
/var/run/lirc/lircd
Apr 12 18:37:07 livingroom lircd 0.7.1: read() failed
Apr 12 18:37:07 livingroom lircd 0.7.1: Connection reset by peer
Apr 12 18:37:07 livingroom lircd 0.7.1: removed client

However, the remote still dies after about 1 minute of use. I can't
for the life of me figure out what revision I was last on that was
working, but I tried a few before and after and none of them work
perfectly.
