Not wanting to get Einsteinian on you, but what is "real time"?
Certainly watching CNN from a DirecTV receiver you are not seeing the
anchor at the "same time" as they are in the studio, and even
terrestrial cable systems have some lag time, as they normally
incorporate satellite links.
Then there is always that pesky speed-of-light thing.
If you are watching a "real" event and watching it on a TV system of
any sort at the "same time" there will always be a latency associated
with the TV system, this is usually more obvious with audio than with
But for all practical purposes it is "real time", as much as any TV
system can be said to be, and DVR systems simply have a slightly
longer latency than systems without their advanced capability.
