/dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1 are usually the serial ports. I had an  
issue recently where I added a new video card and I couldn't access  
my serial ports any more. Shuffling the cards around fixed it for me.  
I missed the first part of the thread so I don't know if that was  
helpful information or not. :)
