I have made my own serial reciever also, and it was a really fun project. I
also built a  transmitter in the same breadboard.  Actually the parts and a
cheesy pic is on the wiki

However fun of a project it was, I dont know that it'd be cost/time
effective to do it for every box that I use.  Someone pointed me to a site
that does mass produce serial recievers like what was made in the original
poster's message.
