Ah, but as I just posted, there is a good reason.  All I want is that 
small portion of the functionality.  The version requirements make it a 
real chore (basically setting my machine up to compile myth from 
scratch, so I can ensure the version matches my Knoppmyth backend)

Don't worry, the way I do it now works - using the 'pretty' symlinks and 
an NFS drive.
