Does your cable company provide analog channels on the cable line
without the use of a set top box?

The cable company here provides digital set top boxes but also sends
about 70 or 80 channels over the cable line as analog which don't
require a set top box. This is how I feed the mythtv box here.

But if you want to have pay channels and some of the higher channels
provided via the set top box your only choice is to use the cable
companies box. In that case people normally get IR blasters (in your
case I guess you would need an RF device) which are used to change the
channels on the set top box in order to make recordings. You can setup
multiple inputs with different channel sources, one for the set top box
and others using analog signals.

You should also check out firewire options. I have seen it mentioned
here more than once that some cable boxes have firewire connections that
may allow you to record shows as well as select channels.
