Are you sure you don't already have a pre-emptible kernel?  Assuming 
your kernel was compiled with CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC, you check with:

$ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep PREEMPT

If you see "CONFIG_PREEMPT=y", you're already there.
