Is there some issue you are having trouble with? As far as I'm aware,
mythbackend doesn't need X at all, just run it as a daemon.
If you don't want to even have X on the system, just configure Myth from
another machine, like one of the frontends that _does_ have X available.
For example, ssh -X into the backend from a frontend and run mythsetup.

For sure. If you don't have any users or GUI apps running on the
backend, there's little reason to keep all that stuff fired up. Run at
runlevel 3. If you have room to have X and KDE installed, fine, you
don't need to always run it. If you don't have room for it, don't
install it. :)
